DEFINITIONS
agility : the ability to link a number of
movements into a functional movement pattern.
functional
fitness : can be thought of simply as fitness training
that yields a response that allows you to function in real life situations.
muscle
atrophy : literally means no growth but for the
purposes here means the deterioration of 'wasting away' of muscle tissue. Just think about what
happens to a muscle in a leg after injury when it hasn't been used for awhile and that is what atrophy
is.
muscle
hypertrophy : is the opposite to atrophy and is the
'growth' or increase in size of muscle. This is what is seen in resistance or weight
training.
primary fitness :
training for cardiovascular endurance, strength and flexibility with a focus on a healthy body composition of fat
to lean muscle. Primary fitness results in more of a 'how do I feel and look' outcome but does form a
foundation for secondary fitness training.
secondary fitness :
components of fitness that go beyond those of the primary base and include elements of coordination, agility,
reaction time, speed and power.
